YYGS has been one of the most enriching experiences I’ve ever had the honor of participating in. From its lectures led by world-renowned experts to workshops designed to inspire attendees, it made for an unforgettable program.

Being a non-native English speaker made me nervous initially, however as the program went along, I felt comfortable speaking in a room full of students with an impressive mastery of the language.

Another aspect of the programme I enjoyed a lot was simulations. Gaining the opportunity to work with other people on a personal project was very humbling. I learnt how to code a website using HTML and also made lifelong friends I hope to meet in the near future.

Coming from a small rural town in Arizona, you tend to forget the amount of diversity in the world and in peoples’ stories. After YYGS, I learned that it is important to surround yourself with people from all types of backgrounds and perspectives because that is how we can create change in the world.

I have lived in the Middle East since I was four years old. Due to the region’s social set-up and constraints, I developed a passion for promoting freedom of speech and equality. However, it has always been difficult to openly discuss these topics. YYGS provided an inclusive environment that encouraged students to share their opinions on a variety of subjects. I was able to discuss issues I was passionate about and explore approaches to addressing these issues.

Initially I was skeptical about online program and wondered how sessions like Family Time would be conducted virtually and be impactful. To my surprise, Family Time was among the best sessions as I enjoyed interacting with other likeminded students from all over the world and learnt different cultures.

Traditional education teaches students to memorize and repeat; it inculcates pupils the knowledge education believes they need. YYGS was different—it was everything. Through the seminars, simulations, and breakout discussions, students were not only able to practice their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but most importantly, they were able to do so in a safe and supportive environment.

YYGS has given me a myriad of different perspectives from passionate peers around the globe and drastically changed my mindset on the issues we face today. I started to view this “dark veil” of the pandemic not as a hindrance but as an opportunity for change, a needed momentum for a long-awaited movement.

I entered YYGS confused and uncertain about what career path I should follow. I had always liked neuroscience, but I never considered studying it. Until I met instructor Maddy Lee. She started the “Neuroscience and the Pursuit of Happiness” seminar with mind-bugging questions, she opened up debates, and later on, she blew my mind. She was able to convey to me so much information in such a little time. I left that seminar amazed, inspired, and proud. I felt proud because it seemed like my life had led me to that very seminar to discover myself.
