I am an artist, a political enthusiast, a writer, a male transgender, an introvert growing up in Vietnam. I am planning to major in Political Science and maybe minor in Studio Arts/Visual Arts in college as I really want to become a political journalist and activist in the future. Some people might call me a “Social Justice Warrior” to mock my dedication for positive changes, but I am not ashamed of that “label”.

During the third block of YYGS I met Rafa, one of the few other mexicans attending the program. After meeting him and the other three mexicans (that we are aware) that attended BBS and PLE, we realised Mexico had a problem, and it wasn’t the lack of opportunities, but the way we, as mexicans, viewed them. Since we’re young we’re told to aim high, but never too high, we are inculcated the fear of failing and in consequence we fall into a category where all our barriers are self created.

I love playing sports - soccer and basketball in particular. My goal is to bridge my interests in sports, technology, and engineering to find ways to contribute to athletes of all backgrounds. I also hope to be a student-athlete in college!

For anyone on the fence about applying, I hope that sharing my experience will tip the scale in favor. Walking onto campus on the first day, I was very excited, but I also couldn’t hide the fact that I was beginning to feel incredibly nervous and honestly even a bit uncomfortable. According to a 2017 statistic that the YYGS program is really proud about, 48% of admitted students are international, representing over 142 countries and 52 states. These statistics are unbelievable!

Someday, I hope to travel the world. I plan to double major with a Global Affairs and Economics degree at Yale University.

Self-quote: Life is a blank canvas. The stroke of the brush could start us on a life-long journey of discovery. In the end, Its up to us how we want to paint it.

Fun Fact: I had my first Starbucks and Bubble Tea during YYGS-Beijing.
