I realized that YYGS’ ability to challenge students is exactly what makes it a truly worthwhile experience. YYGS pushed me to attempt questions to which the answers have yet to be discovered, and exposed me to ideologies, philosophies and events unfamiliar to most. Family Time, the Simulation and my work on the media team as a humansofyygs content creator especially allowed me to meet some of the most impressive, potential-filled persons I am now proud to call friends.

My sister and I co-founded PiSocieties, a non-profit organization in 2020. It is a mentorship program in which Jamaican women currently working in or studying (at the university level) STEM, are given a virtual platform in which they offer tips, advice and knowledge to Jamaican girls intent on pursuing those fields in the future.

We conceptualized this program after realizing that throughout my personal academic and career journey, my sole source of guidance has been my older sister. This led my sister and I to ponder the fate of the multitude of Jamaican girls who desire a future in competitive, male-dominated fields  but lack any figures within their lives where they can seek advice.

We recently hosted our 2021 seminars and are preparing for multiple 2022 seminars. Topics include CSEC and CAPE, applying to university, working in the industry and more. We’ve had mentors from Dartmouth, Stanford, Kettering University and the University of the West Indies Jamaica and mentees interested in programming, mathematics, epidemiology, mechanical and chemical engineering, gynaecology, psychology and so much more.
