SGC 2021

Everyone’s perspective offered a new way of seeing a situation, like how we came up with the idea of school gardens to tackle malnutrition and food insecurity in subsaharan countries. We were so diverse that I became friends with students from countries I have never heard of!

This past summer, during my YYGS experience, me and two groupmates from the US and China came up with an idea called “the school gardening project.” After a few days of finishing our proposal and presentation, I began thinking of the ways how I could execute this project in real life. My aim was basically addressing the local city administration about the undermined knowledge of gardening and explaining how it could change kids’ futures, reduce malnutrition and fight food insecurity.

After discussing this idea with my teachers and friends, I started doing the project. After trying to discuss this project proposal with different stakeholders, I realized that reaching officals and making my voice heard was not an easy task in our sub-city administration. As the second wave pandemic hit, the case got put on hold. I’m still trying; however, I learned a lot of things on the way.
