YYGS provided the space needed to develop lifelong connections and strengthen my analytic skills. Although virtual, my instructors and this experience provided me with the tools needed to take ownership of my personal learning experiences and view academic material in a new light.

As an aspiring criminal defense attorney, I have been interested in researching issues within the criminal justice system in need of amendment. Therefore, for my first published article with Vox Atlanta, I wrote about the need for educational opportunities within the incarcerated youth population. This article inspired me to make a change, serving as the inspiration behind my newest initiative; providing college application preparation to these individuals.

My program will include presenting powerpoints to my school community, showcasing the need for educational opportunities within the juvenile justice system, and creating a school club to involve members of the community. With three pillars including education, teen mentorship, and adult tutoring/mentorship, my high school peers will have the opportunity to mentor students and complete virtual check-ins. While teachers will provide supplemental subject specific tutoring.

Although my program has yet to take place, I have created a timeline to secure its development. Future milestones include talking to local juvenile centers to identify a location for my work, a group of students to work with, and community partners to provide SAT and college essay tutoring. Moreover, I will communicate with organizations that have completed work similar to my project including The Next Level Boys Academy and college admissions counselors to design sensitivity training, establish appropriate protocols, and understand how to effectively communicate with incarcerated youth.
