“Specifically, I loved every aspect of philosophy explored in every aspect of life there. I had always shown interest in the why of things and how they are important to know and to question, but I had not had an experience to branch out as much as I did by attending my favorite seminar ‘Bioethics Enhancement, Treatment, and the Self’ and by conversing with several friends who had a big desire to know every bit of philosophy possible.”

Since leaving YYGS, I have started building an exchange program between the United States and my school in Guatemala. This started because of a wonderful person I met at YYGS, her name is Aletheia. Aletheia and I were talking the last day of the program and as we talked about how we were going to miss each other very much, a thought came up. Aletheia’s school in Illinois used to have an exchange program with another school in Costa Rica, in the interest of their students learning and improving their Spanish.

This gave me an idea, I thought that an experience surrounded by native speakers would also benefit my classmates who struggle with English as a second language. This year, in January, Aletheia will visit me in Guatemala to move this initiative forward. She will then return to her school with the experience of attending a Spanish-speaking school and will seek to finalize the details regarding the exchange as it becomes a reality next school year.
