“YYGS has been a very wholesome experience for me. I learned the value of diversity and heard from students from 130 countries. My experience has fostered my intellectual curiosity and deepened my understanding of world issues.”

When Prime Minister Oli declared lockdown from March 24, I got the information about Nepalese migrants workers stuck on the Nepal-India border in the far western part of the country. Unfortunately, more than 1000 Nepali migrants from eight districts were stuck in three different camps in Dharchula, India across Mahakali river since March 30. These farmers from Bajhang who had gone to Dharchula in the search of work, to earn money during the off-season were now unable to reach home for planting.

I along with my teammates, under the supervision of Mr. Hemendra Bohora, decided to help them with whatever help we could provide. We started online fundraising. We had been able to gather great financial aid from people all around the world in a short period of time. We sought help from Climbing Beyond the Summits (CBTS) team in Dharchula, India to supply food items to the camps. CBTS was one of the first ones to help Nepalis stuck in Dharchula before the Indian administration stepped in. Later, the Indian administration with the help of Indian NGO Goonj provided them with two basic meals a day and monitored their health.

Finally, after a 33 days long struggle, they were finally allowed into Nepal. Two of our prominent partners; Byansi Shauka Samaj and Chhangru Youth, helped the workers with the rest of their journey to their home. The two bridges on the Mahakali river were opened at 8 am. After receiving a quick medical checkup, they received a bag with food items and water and Rs 500( $4.28) as help with the journey back to home. We are very obliged towards each and every individual from Nepal and overseas who decided to help us with whatever amount they could.
