SGC 2021

On my first day, I had all my stationary ready. I thought it would be another ordinary school day, where I take notes and listen to the teacher without being fully engrossed. Instead, I was utterly taken aback by the new style of learning. Every session was mentally stimulating, and I could engage in discussions and see different points of view.

The day YYGS ended is the day Green Global Youth was born into existence. One of my family time members, Nada, came up with a great initiative to start Green Global Youth, an online campaign dedicated to spreading awareness of climate change after a lecture about climate emergencies. I co-led the organization with her to spread awareness of climate change and its dire situation.

I joined Green Global Youth because climate change has ties into women’s rights. I am a huge feminist, and I know that climate change is a barrier to women’s rights. Additionally, I have hope that the world can get better. I remember going to China 5 years ago; the streets had smog so thick that the road in front of us was no longer there. The sea by my house was filled with sewage and littered with plastic. When I returned in 2019, I was shocked by the change. Smog no longer filled my lungs as the air was cleaner. The sea, which was once littered, was now a tourist attraction. Change can happen, and things can get better. Even though the situation at the moment looks pessimistic, I have hope that change can happen. We should not lose hope and keep creating awareness so more people know climate change is real.
