Yale Young Global Scholars To Award 30 Scholarships to Students from North Africa and Middle East

November 17, 2017

Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) is thrilled to offer 30 Young Leaders Scholarships to talented high school students from the Middle East or North Africa to attend YYGS in 2018. For the past two years, thanks to generous donor support, YYGS has proudly welcomed more than 40 scholarship recipients from the region to learn from Yale faculty and instructors for two weeks during the summer. Young Leaders Scholarships cover 100% of tuition costs and travel expenses. Recipients of the Young Leaders Scholarship qualify for financial assistance and demonstrate outstanding leadership, community involvement, and excellent academic performance.

YYGS is a summer enrichment program that brings together talented high school students from around the world for a two-week academic experience at Yale University or Yale Center Beijing. The program offers seven unique interdisciplinary sessions featuring Yale University faculty focused on areas ranging from international security to biomedical engineering. Young Leadership Scholarship recipients may attend any one of the seven sessions of YYGS in the summer of 2018.

In the YYGS Financial Aid and Scholarships video, last year’s scholarship cohort, led by Sedra Almohammad from Saudi Arabia, describe how they directly benefited from their YYGS experience. The video follows Sedra during a day in her life at YYGS, providing a sense of her impressions of a Yale faculty lecture, peer discussion section, and Capstone Project presentation. Other scholarship recipients featured in this video represent countries such as Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco.

“I was surrounded by people who were constantly talking about important international issues, sharing innovative project ideas, exploring each other’s cultures, and learning about the subjects they’re most passionate about. If it weren’t for the scholarships offered to students like myself, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to live this amazing experience. Thank you for giving me the chance to do so.” -Racha from Tunisia (Politics, Law & Economics, 2017)

In order to be eligible for the need-based Young Leadership Scholarships, students must attend school in the Middle East or North Africa. All scholarship applicants must meet YYGS general eligibility requirements in addition to completing the financial aid portion of the online application. YYGS highly encourages all students, regardless of their ethnic and socioeconomic background, to apply for this transformational educational opportunity.
