Position Focus

The Yale Young African Scholars Program (YYAS) is a high school academic enrichment and college preparatory initiative for African secondary school students administered by the Yale Young Global Scholars Program in collaboration with the HigherLife Foundation. Reporting to the Director, the Project Manager will join a fast-growing organization within Yale to lead an initiative that has expanded to include featured weeklong academic enrichment programs in Ghana, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe followed by yearlong mentorship programs for 300 students from across Africa each year. The YYAS Project Manager will be responsible for steering all facets of the program, to include: marketing, admissions, summer staff hiring, curriculum design, budgets, partnership relations, and the administration of an online mentorship program for African high school students across the continent.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Manage and implement the overarching strategy and vision of the Yale Young African Schoalrs Program
  • Recruit, hire, and lead team of YYAS Associate Fellows during the Yale Young African Scholars Program each summer
  • Structure program curriculum, including seminars, faculty lectures, and guest speakers
  • Lead the application reading and admissions process
  • Serve as primary Yale contact for HigherLife Foundation
  • Manage program communication with local partners, outreach partners, prospective applicants, admitted students, and all other affiliates
  • Coordinate travel and on-site accommodations for YYAS
  • Oversee program expenditures
  • Strengthen and coordinate YYAS alumni network

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of work experience in project management
  • Self-starter and entrepreneurial
  • Experience working on the African continent
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Background in research design and statistics
  • Willingness to spend one month in Africa to administer YYAS program (late July-late August)
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends during the summers; fairly regular hours otherwise
