Position Focus

The Yale Young African Scholars Program (YYAS) is a high school academic enrichment and college preparatory initiative for African secondary school students administered by the Yale Young Global Scholars Program in collaboration with the HigherLife Foundation. Reporting to the Director, the Mentorship Coordinator will gain experience in all facets of a fast-growing organization that has expanded to serve 300 students from across Africa each year. The YYAS Mentorship Coordinator will take on a unique and exciting opportunity to shape and implement a new online mentorship program for African high school students. The first continental-wide initiative of its kind, the primary goal of the mentorship program is to prepare YYAS alumni for the U.S. college application process.

Responsibilities include: provide guidance and expertise to secondary school students on the U.S. college admissions process; manage and create content for the online mentorship platform; manage YYAS website resources page; design college readiness workshops for YYAS summer sessions; recruit mentors from the Yale student body and other universities; identify and track key mentorship program statistics; read applications of secondary school students from around the world applying to YYAS; sit on the admissions committee and assist in making YYAS admissions decisions. The Mentorship Coordinator may also support the Yale Young Global Scholars Program with mentorship initiatives for students attending sessions on Yale’s campus and in Singapore and China.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement online mentorship program for 200 - 400 African high school students, spread across the continent
  • Act as in-house expert on the U.S. college admissions process, including staying informed and up-to-date on all matters related to the U.S. application process, particularly as it relates to African applicants
  • Design college readiness workshops for the week-long YYAS program
  • Identify and select YYAS mentors from Yale student body and other universities
  • Identify and track key mentorship program statistics
  • Manage and create content for the online platform, including responding to emails/messages from YYAS mentors and mentees and using the platform for tracking
  • Manage YYAS website resources page
  • Serve as primary liaison to standardized test prep organization engaged in preparing YYAS alumni in mentorship program
  • Administer test grant fund for students that need financial assistance to register for standardized tests
  • Support YYAS Project Manager in engaging with local partners, particularly communication and coordination of local mentorship with online program
  • Support Asia Project Manager on implementation of Asia programs’ college prep component

Preferred Qualifications

  • Self-starter and entrepreneurial
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Background in research design and statistics
  • Experience working in Africa, and familiarity with educational landscape on the continent
  • Familiarity with and experience advising others on U.S. undergraduate applications processes
  • Familiarity with Yale Young Global Scholars or Yale Young African Scholars
  • Willingness to travel to Rwanda, Ghana, and Zimbabwe for program in late July - August 2016
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends during the summers; fairly regular hours otherwise
