2023 Yale Young Global Scholars: Residential Advisor (RA)

Employment Dates: June 13 to July 28 (7 weeks)
Location: New Haven, CT (YYGS does not assist with staff travel costs)
Eligibility: This position does not have any pathways to sponsorship by Yale University. Applicants must be authorized to work in the US.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • $4,200
  • Room and board (3 meals/day) on campus

Work Schedule:

The Residential Advisors (RA) are full-time positions, and they work on a shift rotation (including nights and weekends). RAs are assigned to one of three Residential Colleges (Pierson, Davenport, or Jonathan Edwards). We are looking to hire multiple RAs, including a subset that are passionate about each of the four academic tracks (STEM, Social Sciences, Humanities, Cross-Disciplinary) to support the YYGS Leadership team.

Job Description:

Each Residential College has a team consisting of a Residential College Lead and Residential Advisors. Under the direct supervision of the Residential College Lead, RA’s are responsible for nurturing a safe and welcoming YYGS community, promoting the safety and security of YYGS participants and staff, and facilitating residential activities in their residential college, Program Office, and throughout Yale’s campus. The academic-focused RA’s will also have other (varied) responsibilities including attending and assisting with lectures, seminars, symposium and/or helping the YYGS Program Managers (PMs)and Instructional Staff as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work regular shifts in the Program Office (which is the participant hub for everything non-academic from lost keys and maintenance issues to sign in/out and roommate conflicts. It is also the instructor hub for A/V support and classroom needs.)
  • Ensure the safety and security of all participants, and promote program rules including attendance expectations, behavior, curfew, good health hygiene, and boundaries.
  • Provide support and positive role modeling for participants.
  • Support Residential College Lead and YYGS Instructional Staff with coordination and implementation of the following activities (list is subject to change): YYGS Family Time, Lectures, Symposium, Panel Presentations, Speaker Series, Student Showcase, Recreational Activities, End of Session Party, Free Time, and Special Meals.
  • Communicate concerns in a timely fashion.
  • Academic-focused RAs will be responsible for providing technical and administrative support to instructors and lecturers. They will set up lecture presentations and be the point person for technology requests, as well as assist instructors with Audio/Visual equipment in real time. YYGS PMs will lean on these RAs to assist with any academic-related duties.
  • Perform other related functions at the direction of the Residential Life Manager, Residential College Lead, and YYGS Leadership Team.

Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • Successful completion of background check;
  • Eager to live in our residential colleges with YYGS Instructional Staff and YYGS participants (ages 16 – 18 from all over the world);
  • Interest in working with diverse youth and supporting intercultural respect and communication;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizations skills, and an ability to multi-task;
  • Enjoy working outdoors and walking across campus several times per day;
  • Available for occasional coordination meetings (virtual) in Spring 2023 and ability to arrive on June 13 and live on campus working full-time from June 13 (12:30pm) — July 28 (6pm), 2023.

Preferred:

  • Pursuing B.A. or B.S. degree
  • Passion for gaining residential life experience
