2023 Yale Young Global Scholars: Residential Life Manager

Employment Dates: June 5 to July 29 (8 weeks)
Location: New Haven, CT (YYGS does not assist with staff travel costs)
Eligibility: This position does not have any pathways to sponsorship by Yale University. Applicants must be authorized to work in the US.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • $8,000
  • Room and board (3 meals/day) on campus
  • Daily time off and one day off per week

Work Schedule:

The Residential Life Manager (RLM) is a full-time position and works on a shift rotation (including nights and weekends). The RLM will be part of an overnight on-call rotation in case of emergencies throughout the duration of the program.

Job Description:

Under the direct supervision of our year-round Assistant Director of Residential Life (A-DRL), the RLM supports YYGS Leadership in organizing and managing many aspects of residential life for 600 participants and 60+ residential life and instructional staff members in three residential colleges for the duration of the program. This includes creating a welcoming environment and ensuring safety and security for all staff and students, handling non-medical emergencies, supporting program operations, being a leader on the Residential Life Team, and supporting the program as needed. The RLM will act as a proxy for the A-DRL as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Co-supervise Residential Life Team of 25-30, including the Residential College Leads and Residential Advisors. Empower staff to work independently and together. Support their needs, monitor their work ethic and quality of work, manage their schedules and provide constructive feedback.
  • Assist with planning and running Residential Life and Instructional Staff orientations.
  • Support facilitation of the participant check-in/check-out process.
  • Direct Residential Life Team in coordinating and implementing curriculum for the following activities (list is subject to change): YYGS Family Time, Lectures, Symposium, Panel Presentations, Speaker Series, Student Showcase, Recreational Activities, End of Session Party, Free Time and Special Meals.
  • Ensure that the residential needs of participants and staff are met (facilities and accommodations, etc.) and report any concerns to Yale Conferences & Events (YC&E).
  • Ensure that participants: are accounted for at all times, are respectful of Yale spaces and affiliates; abide by evening curfews and attendance requirements; follow health protocols; respect program rules and boundaries.
  • Implement strategies for disciplinary action and support of YYGS participants, including joining the A-DRL to meet with and properly document interactions with participants.
  • Carry and answer the program cell phone during the day and overnight (when on shift).

Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • Successful completion of background check;
  • Extensive experience working with teenage population in a residential setting;
  • Demonstrated experience in team management;
  • Eager to live in our residential colleges with YYGS Staff and YYGS participants (ages 16 – 18 from all over the world);
  • Capacity to work with diverse youth and support intercultural respect and communication
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, organizations skills and an ability to multi-task and handle stressful situations;
  • Enjoy working outdoors and walking across campus several times per day and lifting up to 30 pounds;
  • Available for occasional coordination meetings (virtual) in Spring 2023 and ability to arrive on June 13 and live on campus working full-time from June 13 (12:30pm) — July 29 (12:30pm), 2023.

Preferred:

  • B.A. or B.S. degree
  • Experience dealing with Mental Health concerns
